I have had quite a few friends now comment on how well I have coped with cancer and want to know how have I kept so positive. I don’t want to try and spout off like a self help guru but if this answer can help any of my friends or anyone facing difficulty (Not just Cancer) im happy to share! So here we go…I hope I don’t sound like a massive twat in the process!
There seems to be a bit of a misconception from my perspective of positive thinking. To be positive Its not about saying “im wonderful”, mantra positive messages, power sayings, slogans to yourself and others all day. This approach in the long term wont make any difference. You will soon fall back into pain, worry or stress of whatever is getting you down. this happens because you don’t really believe what your saying is true.To me staying positive is only the surface manifestation of a more important and deeper thing called SELF BELIEF.
For me self belief comes in the form of thinking hard about 2 areas of my life:
No.1 Previous trials and hardships, successes and failures that I have achieved or overcome.
You can do this By thinking about previous hardship, success or failure to define moments when you realize there have been tasks at hand that seemed too hard yet you overcame it. These can be big or small it does not matter it just matters you overcame it like Exams, giving birth, bungee jumping, physical challenges, learning a new job or finding a new partner etc. Self belief can come from failures too as long as you can learn the lesson from the failure or mistake you will never fail again! (fail often and hard don’t wait for all the lights to be green!) By identifying these things will give you confidence and self belief in your ability.
No2. The love of the future, my potential and goals I want to achieve in life.
Whatever is the problem you face you should not sit and look at it too long or it will put you on pause indefinitely. The problem (cancer in my case) needs to be put in place not me on pause. I want to live so I look past it and see all the things that I want and have still have to achieve in life. You can do this too once you understand the problem. Line it up with your future and see yourself fast forward past it not Stuck on pause button. This will give you the excitement and zest to carry on with life in general.
Once you can put these thoughts into action you really realize that nothing is out of your control and that how insignificant problems are to the things you really want out of life. Your attitude will change and you will become more confident with the task at hand. The positive attitude will shine through and you will find things get easier making way for the things that you want.
No I don’t have the perfect life …yet! however these 2 steps have helped me overcome and keep going with allot. I also think a dash of luck is needed too, however I believe you make your own luck by being pro active.
If you have something life threatening like cancer your not invincible and I certainly could have been dead by now however my self belief has helped me as much as my treatment. The doctors at the hospital have commented on the remarkable rapid reduction of my tumor and my resilience to the chemotherapy. They did not tell me initially but I was penciled in as a goner. Self belief has helped me get over 2 major bowel operations including a colostomy and colostomy reversal.
I see too many patients at the hospital moan, grumble, sulk and feel sorry for themselves, blaming Dr’s, Nurses and the government…this gives the problem the edge. Its you who has to deal with it at the end of the day no one else. Yes cancer or any problem can come back things can go wrong but ultimately man up and know you are better than that!
My last few of bits of advice that help me keep a strong self belief are as follows:

Scott’s patience and humour make the classes a really fun way to learn a serious subject. As well as teaching self defence techniques, Scott uses role play for different scenarios that could happen in real life - a safe way to learn how to get yourself out of trouble before it actually happens…
